Polygon Labs and market maker GSR have launched the mainnet of their incubated DeFi-focused blockchain Katana, marking a significant advancement in decentralized finance infrastructure. The chain debuted with over $200 million in productive total value locked (TVL), positioning it among the most capitalized layer-2 launches this year according to industry reports.
The Katana Foundation, the nonprofit organization overseeing the chain, revealed that users who pre-deposited funds during the private mainnet phase will earn the network’s native KAT token as rewards. This economic model aims to create a self-sustaining DeFi ecosystem by concentrating liquidity across integrated protocols.
Developed through Polygon Labs’ incubation program, Katana specifically addresses liquidity fragmentation and unsustainable yield mechanisms prevalent in decentralized finance. “Unlike the fragmented traditional DeFi experience, Katana concentrates all liquidity in a set of protocols and collects yield from all potential sources to power a self-sustaining DeFi engine for long-term growth,” the foundation stated.
Technical Architecture and Design
Katana utilizes a customized version of OP Stack called cdk-opgeth and integrates with Polygon AggLayer for zero-knowledge proof-powered finality. The network employs Succinct Labs’ SP1 prover to generate zk-proofs, enhancing security while maintaining interoperability across chains.
Polygon Labs CEO Marc Boiron emphasized that Katana represents a paradigm shift from general-purpose blockchains: “This isn’t another ‘chain for everything’ play. Katana is focused on DeFiβa purpose-built appchain designed to concentrate liquidity and maximize real yield.” The architecture prioritizes deep liquidity pools to minimize slippage and stabilize borrowing rates.
Economic Model and Yield Mechanisms
Katana’s economic innovation lies in its multi-source yield generation, which includes:
- VaultBridge strategies enabling native Ethereum yields within Katana
- Chain-owned Liquidity (CoL) reserves
- AUSD-backed treasury flows
This integrated approach moves beyond token inflation incentives by recycling protocol-generated yields back to users. GSR’s involvement as co-incubator brings market-making expertise to ensure efficient liquidity distribution across the ecosystem.
Strategic Partnerships and Integrations
The chain has established key integrations with DeFi protocols including decentralized exchange Sushi and lending platform Morpho. Through partnership with Universal, Katana enables direct onchain trading of non-EVM assets like SOL, XRP, and SUI without requiring pre-seeded DEX liquidity.
Universal’s integration with Coinbase Prime provides institutional-grade custody solutions for supported assets, broadening Katana’s appeal to professional investors. The Katana Foundation is also collaborating with oracle provider Chainlink and rollup platform Conduit to expand ecosystem functionality.
This network of partnerships allows Katana to offer unique features like institutional-grade custody while maintaining decentralized access. The foundation continues to onboard additional DeFi protocols to strengthen its liquidity concentration thesis.
Looking ahead, the Katana team plans to enhance yield-generation mechanisms and expand cross-chain interoperability features. The foundation’s roadmap includes developing more sophisticated treasury management tools and exploring new asset classes for integration.

The launch signals growing institutional interest in specialized DeFi infrastructure, potentially influencing how new chains approach liquidity design. Katana’s TVL achievement demonstrates market confidence in application-specific blockchains as solutions to DeFi’s fragmentation challenges.
- AggLayer
- Polygon’s zero-knowledge powered aggregation layer that enables unified liquidity and cross-chain interoperability through cryptographic proofs.
- OP Stack
- A modular, open-source development framework for building Ethereum layer-2 blockchains, which Katana customized for its DeFi-specific requirements.
- Zero-knowledge proofs
- Cryptographic methods that allow transaction validation without revealing underlying data, used in Katana for secure cross-chain operations.
- Productive TVL
- Total Value Locked that actively generates yield through integrated protocols, distinguishing from idle capital in conventional DeFi systems.
- Chain-owned Liquidity (CoL)
- A mechanism where the blockchain protocol itself maintains liquidity reserves to support ecosystem operations and stability.
