Ripple developers proposed XLS-0089d, a metadata standard for XRP Ledger tokens to enhance discoverability and interoperability. This opt-in framework allows token issuers to attach descriptive data like names, symbols, and icons without disrupting existing functionality. It addresses fragmentation in token identification across wallets and exchanges.
The proposal could streamline integration for developers and improve user experience by making tokens easily searchable. By standardizing metadata, XRPL tokens gain compatibility with DeFi protocols and market aggregators, potentially increasing adoption. Importantly, it maintains backward compatibility to avoid network splits.
If adopted, this standard may position XRPL as a more competitive smart-contract platform against Ethereum and Solana. It reflects Ripple’s strategy to expand XRPL’s utility beyond payments following its SEC settlement.
